The First Water
Under full load, the first water east
Ninety litres on my back, filled to the top. A second pack across the chest. A cotton bag — food, water — in one hand.
Gleis 11. The board said 13:50. Then 14:05.
We left at 15:00.
The slow pull out of the station, and the Oder opened wide out the window — braided with reed islands, a small boat working the channel, the far bank already Poland.
Hours of it ahead now. Nothing to do but watch the land change.
The first water, going east.
