The Water From Above

Day 7 — the greenhouse before the heat, the trough gone dry

The greenhouse first, before the heat. The cucumbers and the tomatoes tended — done while the house was still cool, the work finished before the sun stood full on it.

A baby cry. A cowbell, further off. The breakfast table calling.

The rest of the day goes to the camp. The rooms, the bedding, the small repairs a houseful will ask for — what has to be done is done, at the pace the house keeps. The children are coming.

A friend of the hosts is here for the week — she knows wild plants, what to gather and how to keep it. She keeps a channel for it: more than forty thousand follow her. I learned what I could, first-hand.

The heat building through the afternoon. The old trough the animals used to come to — the water that fed it from above has stopped. No drip now. Dry.

Before sunset, later than usual, all of us back at the table. The rest of the work is done after sunset.
