Where the Bells Come From
The valley in daylight, and the source of a sound
No cars. No planes. Cow bells, somewhere up the valley.
Zhyva Khata — the living house. In the heart of the Hutsul.
Since I came, hours with my hosts. An overview of what they have built here. The name is exact.
The next days are for getting ready — summer camps coming. The new toilets and showers to finish. Rooms to sweep. Sleeping bags, blankets, mattresses checked, and mended where the mending is needed.
In the evening the neighbour came by. Cheese, butter, cream. Fresh milk for the morning coffee.
Now I know where the cow bells come from.
